The platypus is a native of Australia. No other animal in the world is like the platypus.

The platypus lives in small creeks in isolated areas of bushland. It builds long, winding burrows in creek banks which can be 18 metres long.

The platypus has a flat, wide, rubbery duckbill and short, strong legs. It has thick, short, woolly fur which is waterproof. It also has webbed feet with sharp claws and a long, flat tail.

The platypus swims in the creek using its tail a flipper. It scoops up creek water and mud with its bill to find insects, worms and shellfish. The platypus lays eggs and feeds its young on milk.
